No. 22 and Boyd have partnered to offer handbuilt, cutting edge wheelsets that match the features, look, and build quality expected of No. 22.
Designed around a tubeless, hookless rim profile, the No. 22 / Boyd Gravel wheelset uses a wide rim inner diameter (23.4mm) for a perfect traction-embracing light-bulbed tire profile, ideally for gravel and cyclocross tires between 32-40mm in width, as well as higher volume 28mm or greater tubeless road tires. In a 36mm depth, these wheels perfectly balance weight, stability and aerodynamics. Because the rim has been designed from the outset as a disc-specific design we’ve been able to shed a few grams at the rim itself, reducing rotating mass without compromising safety, and the wheel’s unique 2.8mm offset amplifies spoke balance under heavy load.
These wheels feature Boyd’s centerlock Quest disc hubs, featuring 6 pawls operating on 36 engagement teeth for an incredibly quick 5 degrees of engagement.
Hubs can be one of the best ways to increase the stiffness of a set of wheels. If you think of a wheel as a triangle instead of a circle, the spokes have a base at the hub and come to a point at the rim. By increasing the base of this triangle you are making for a sturdier object, which translates directly to a stiffer wheel. Boyd's hubs have some of the widest flange spacing on the market, which combined with the strength of the rims, help to make for an incredibly well responding and stiff wheelset.
Hub stability is something that is often overlooked, but is felt immediately when standing (such as when sprinting or climbing). To accomplish higher stability the bearings were also moved out as far as possible on the axle. Many hubs have a long end cap on the non-drive side with the bearing quite far from the edge of the hub. By supporting the non-drive side bearing and moving it out to the edge of the axle, the wheel stability is greatly increased.
No. 22 / Boyd rims are handbuilt with Pillar Aerowing spokes that come in at the same weight as the Sapim CX Ray, but have better stiffness, fatigue rating, and aerodymanics.
Our disc wheels are all built in 24/28 spoke counts.
Wheels ship with tubeless tape and valves pre-installed for easy initial tubless setup.
